今回採り上げるのはwhile awayというPVです。whileというと接続詞や「時間,期間」(『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館)という意味の名詞がよく知られていますが,動詞も押さえておきましょう。
whileの語源はspace of timeを表す古英語のhwil(『リーダーズ英和辞典』第2版,研究社)。そこから動詞で「〈時を〉(気楽に)過ごす;〈退屈などを〉紛らす⦅away⦆」(『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上)という意味があります。ここでのwhile awayはまさに「暇つぶし」のことです。
ちなみに,1行目のIf idle hands are the devil’s plaything, Satan must hate smartphones.はThe devil finds work for idle hands.(小人閑居して不善をなす)という諺を前提としたものです(『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館)。確かにsmartphoneでidle handsがなくなってしまえば,Satanはがっかりですもんね。(院生 小山本)
