NEW YORK — The United States sets aside an area larger than Japan for wildlife conservation. This is one of the things I found out as we spent two weeks this past summer at an isolated cottage on the Chesapeake Bay.
"Cottage," I gather, is a vacation term here.

gatherというと「集める」あるいは「集まる」という意味で記憶している人も多いと思いますが，集めた情報をもとに「（…から）推測する；〈…ということだと〉結論を下す」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味もあります。
英英辞書にはto believe that something is true based on the information you have（Longman Active Study Dictionary）とありました。essayなんかを書くとき使ってみるといいかもしれません。（院生 小山本）
