Pope seeks to ease tensions with historic visit to Britain
LONDON - Pope Benedict XVI begins a historic state visit to Britain Thursday hoping to improve strained links between Catholics and Anglicans but facing protests over his stance on a range of issues.
The pope will visit Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Birmingham in central England, where the highlight of the four-day trip takes place with the beatification mass of 19th century English cardinal John Henry Newman.
◇the beatification mass
・beatificationを辞書で調べると「列福（式）」とありました（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。さて，この「列福」とは一体何のことでしょうか。手元の国語辞典には掲載されていなかったので，Wikipediaをひくと「キリスト教、カトリック教会において徳と聖性が認められ、聖人（Saint）に次ぐ福者（Beato）の地位に上げられることをいう」とありました。さらに，ここでのmassは「ミサ, ミサ聖祭, ミサの儀式」のこと（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）。つまり，the beatification massとは法王の訪問に合わせて開かれる「John Henry Newman氏の列福式」と解釈できます。

・audienceですが，「聴衆」の他に「（国王・高官などとの）正式会見, 謁見｟with, of ...｠」という意味があり，今回は法王と女王の会見というということもあってこの単語が用いられています（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）。
But the 83-year-old pope is likely to find a more muted welcome from Britain's five million Catholics than his predecessor John Paul II, who was greeted by huge crowds when he paid a pastoral visit to Britain 28 years ago.
◇muted welcome
・TVのリモコンについているミュート（消音）からも想像できますが，mutedには「〈音口調などが〉弱められた」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）という意味があり，ここでは「控えめな歓迎」と解釈できます。
◇paid a pastoral visit
・28年前の1989年，前ローマ法王のヨハネ・パウロ2世はカンタベリー大司教との会談のためにイギリスを訪問しています。宗派分裂後にローマ法王がイギリスを訪問したのはこれが最初で，今回の訪問が注目を集めたのはイギリス国教会の最高指導者である女王（国王）と会見したためです。
pastoralには「牧羊者の，牧者［牧師，司祭］の」（『リーダーズ英和辞典』第2版，研究社）という意味があり，よって，当時会見した相手であるカンタベリー大司教のことを指していると考えられます。また，『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』（同上）に「〈A（人）にB（訪問）を〉する」とあるようにpayはvisit（訪問）を目的語にとることができます。
