powerhouse

今年もまた甲子園が開幕し，連日盛り上がりを見せています。
今回はThe Asahi Shimbun（2010年8月11日付）の甲子園関連記事から気になった表現powerhouseに注目します。

Matsumoto Technical High School of Nagano Prefecture made its Koshien debut in the opening game. The team lost by a large margin, but wasn't half bad in the later innings, scoring its first hit and run with plenty of good defensive play. The Matsumoto boys became the first this year to face the hard reality of seeing their dream end, but I am sure their every precious experience at Koshien will make them want to believe in tomorrow. Come to think of it, every powerhouse had its first defeat.

powerhouseを『新英和中辞典』（第5版，研究社）で調べると「1発電所 2精力家，勢力家」とあり，ここでは2，3の意味です。この二つの意味を見て，電気を生み出すゆえにエネルギーの源ともいえる発電所に，活気や野心に満ちた実力者の姿が例えられた表現なのではと思いました。訳としては「強豪チーム」あたりがよいでしょう。

また，「英辞朗on the WEB」に以下の表現がありました。
・soccer powerhouse「サッカーの最強チーム」
・athletic powerhouse「運動大国，運動競技の強力なチーム」
・powerhouse actors「そうそうたる男優陣」

今年はどんなドラマが生まれるのか，球児の熱い夏を見届けたいと思います。
