Rooney forced into embarrassing apology for rant about booing fans following England's dismal World Cup draw
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Wayne Rooney has issued a grovelling apology following his live TV tirade slating England's fans after his team's woeful 0-0 match against Algeria.
As witnessed by the many millions of England supporters watching last night's game, a furious Rooney was seen snarling a message down the lens of a TV camera.
'Nice to see your own fans booing you. That's what loyal support is,' he was heard snapping as he stormed off the pitch.
However, the Manchester United striker has now said sorry in a statement released via the Football Association.
He said: 'Last night, on reflection I said things in the heat of the moment that came out of frustration of both our performance and the result.
'For my part I apologise for any offence caused by my actions at the end of the game.'
His verbal onslaught came at the end of a chaotic and fractious night for the team as they stumbled to a an abject 0-0 draw against minnows Algeria.
Millions of viewers in pubs and at home who had raced out of work early were left scratching their heads as England failed to make their over-hyped quality count.
And the thousands who turned the Cape Town stadium into a sea of white and red made their feelings known at the final whistle.
London Mayor Boris Johnson, who was at the match, told a source: 'What was that? That was diabolical.'
It was revealed today that a peak audience of 21.3million watched the game on ITV1 - a million more than watched the first England match last Saturday against the United States.
Rooney was the biggest star to underperform but coach Fabio Capello must now go back to the drawing board to discover the reason captain Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and wing ace Aaron Lennon also failed to click.
England must find their teeth in time to beat Slovenia next Wednesday if they want to progress beyond the group stage.
One fan said: 'At this rate, Capello will be looking for a new job in the morning. It's rubbish. Rooney couldn't trap a bag of cement.
'And the team looks like it just doesn't care. There's no energy. 0-0 is just terrible.'
England fans - many of whom have spent a small fortune travelling to South Africa to cheer on the millionaire England players - jeered , whistled and booed as their side failed to break down an organised Algerian side.
Rooney's attack provoked a furious reaction from England fans on Twitter.
Stephen Lawson from North Yorkshire wrote: 'Rooney critcising fans for booing? They've saved years to be there to back you, you pampered overpaid moron.
'Obviously he expects to be worshipped and revered whatever he does - as is a professional footballer's life.'
Adele Mitchell from Swindon, Witlshire, wrote: 'What did he expect? Cheers after their heroic display?'
