The one word you should never say in online dating
Saying this word could halve your chances of getting a date

An online dating app has revealed what it says are the best and worst things to say when chatting with potential new partners online.
Staff at the Hinge app looked at the activity of 5,000 of its users over one day.

And according to the research, users who used the word 'sorry' as an opener in online conversation were 56 per cent less likely to get a person's number.

It also concluded that another big error was being vague and "wishy-washy" with plans. People that suggested vague time periods such as "this weekend" and "next week" for potential dates were 40 per cent less likely to get a person’s number.

OALD8には,第一定義は“not having clear or firm ideas or beliefs”,第二定義は“not bright in colour”とあります。

(Kawada)

paternity leave #2

Japan’s ‘paternity leave’ LDP lawmaker embroiled in adultery allegations

An LDP lawmaker who created a stir in conservative Japan by filing for paternity leave when his child was born now stands accused of flagrant double standards over an alleged extramarital relationship with a model.

Lower House member Kensuke Miyazaki is alleged to have had a rendezvous with the woman days before his wife gave birth.

Miyazaki is married to fellow LDP lawmaker Megumi Kaneko.

Scandal sheet Shukan Bunshun, a weekly magazine, said Wednesday that six days before Kaneko gave birth to a baby boy on Friday, Miyazaki spent the night with the model, identified as Mayu Miyazawa, in Kyoto Prefecture, which contains the area he represents. The magazine alleged Miyazawa traveled from Tokyo to Kyoto for a tryst with the lawmaker at his condo.

まず“paternity”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“the fact of being the father of a particular child, or the question of who the child's father is”と定義されており、「〔法〕父であること、父権」(『ジーニアス英和辞典』大修館書店)を意味すると分かります。 (ninetails)

Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Bernie Sanders have shaken up the US presidential race with decisive victories in the New Hampshire primary.

In his victory speech, the real estate mogul congratulated Democratic winner Mr Sanders but sideswiped that "he wants to give away our country, folks!"

そこで,Merriam-Webster onlineを確認してみると,名詞の意味ですが,“a critical remark about someone or something that is made while talking about someone or something else”とあります。 (Nao)

too good an opportunity to pass up

記事の中で気になった表現は"too good an opportunity to pass up"です。 The offer is too good to pass up"で「その申し出は断るにはもったいない」とあります。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"pass something up"で"Refrain from taking up an opportunity"と定義されております。 (Ume)

Eddie Jordan and Sabine Schmitz join Top Gear line-up

Formula 1 commentator Eddie Jordan and German racing driver Sabine Schmitz are to join the new series of Top Gear.
Motor journalist Chris Harris and TV presenter Rory Reid have also been signed to co-present the programme.
They will join Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc when the BBC Two programme returns in May.
The new presenters were signed after Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond left the programme last year.
Sabine Schmitz will become the show's first female presenter in 15 years.
Speaking about her new role, she said "the chance to combine both driving and filming was too good an opportunity to pass up.
"I've appeared on Top Gear a few times in the past, so I know we're going to have a lot of fun."

mixed bag(復習)

(Koyamamoto)

Most Americans Want to Live to 100: Survey
But they aren't doing much now to prepare for it
As the 21st century progresses, more Americans will live longer than they ever have. And as it turns out, the majority of us are just fine with those projections. According to a new survey by the Stanford Center on Longevity, in partnership with TIME, most Americans want to live to their 100th birthday. The catch? They aren’t putting in the legwork to do so comfortably.
…When it came to health behaviors, though, it was more of a mixed bag. While most of the respondents said they think a healthy diet and exercise are critical to a long life, just 25% report eating as well as they think they should, 24% exercise as much as they think they should.
